What’s the Difference Between Wax and a Ceramic Coating?
The chemistries of wax and ceramic coating are very different. A wax is designed to last for a few months, while a ceramic coating is designed to last for years. Most waxes are formulated with silicone and will attract dust. A ceramic coating is typically 200 times thicker than wax and has better release properties. These release properties allow your vehicle to stay cleaner between washes. It also makes washing and caring for your vehicle much easier since ceramic coatings are designed to repel dust and dirt. The protection and durability provided by a ceramic coating is unmatched when compared to waxes and sealants.
What is the Difference Between a Ceramic Coating and Clear Bra?
A ceramic coating is designed to protect your exterior surfaces from environmental damage but cannot withstand larger impacts. This is where clear bra, or paint-protection film (ppf) comes in. Clear bra will prevent impacts from high-wear areas of the vehicle and preserves the OEM paint finish.

How do I Care for My Ceramic Coated Vehicle?
The best way to care for your newly ceramic-coated vehicle is to wash by hand with the appropriate solutions, tools, and techniques. We highly recommend using the products within the “ecosystem” of the coating’s manufacturer. In other words, if you have chosen to have Opticoat installed on your vehicle, use Opticoat products. While each manufacturer has recommended products and procedures, hand-washing with pH neutral shampoos without wax additives is widely accepted. We recommend the use of high-quality microfiber mitts and towels when washing and drying your vehicle. Take care to always work in the shade, keep your tools and buckets clean, use light pressure, and always remove rinse water as quickly as possible to prevent water spots/deposits.
Are Drive-Through Car Washes Bad for Ceramic Coating?
Drive-through car washes are not necessarily bad for ceramic coating, but they can shorten the lifespan of the coating. If you use a drive-through car wash, be sure to choose one that does not use harsh chemicals or abrasive brushes.
Do I Need to Wax My Car if I Have a Ceramic Coating?
No, you don’t need to wax your car if you have a ceramic coating. Most waxes contain silicones and will attract dust, while coatings are designed to repel dust. Some waxes also contain harsh solvents and abrasives that could negatively affect your coating. Coatings are designed to shed and release any foreign object that comes into contact with your paint. When wax is applied to a coating, the coating attempts to “shed” the wax and renders it useless. Your coating will always maintain a “just-waxed” look as long as it is cared for properly. The coating will protect your car from the elements and help keep your car’s paint looking shiny and new.
